Experience
I received my PhD from the University of London, UK, before undertaking postdoctoral research in the Department of Medicine at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London.
I subsequently undertook research at the Department of Neuroscience, Baylor College of Medicine, and the Institute of Neurological Science, University of Texas, USA.
While in the USA, I worked with therapists exploring men's issues, including attachment, anger, emotional classification and differentiation, and the expression of emotions. During this period, I also explored Eastern and Western philosophies, approaches to holistic health and psychotherapy.
These experiences contributed to my integrative, systems-based understanding of psychological processes and behaviour. Over the past 30 years, I have studied the biological basis of behaviour, particularly the effect of stress on the development of psychological trauma. My interests also include research into psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), including the connections between stress, anxiety, depression and trauma-related behaviour.
My counselling experience includes working with people experiencing trauma-related, substance-use, ageing-related and brain-injury-related mental health challenges, as well as work involving child care, adoption, guardianship and judicial matters.
